Parkside Community School is seeking an experienced and Montessori-trained Director of Education for the 2022-23 school year.

Parkside is a private, progressive Montessori school founded in 1991 in Austin, Texas. We serve approximately 100 children ages 3-12 in six classrooms: three Primary; two Lower Elementary; and one Upper Elementary. Our mission is for each child to become an independent, self-reliant person, aware of the interrelated nature of all life, with the skills necessary to achieve their own goals and make a positive contribution to society. We embrace bits of a variety of educational methods in addition to the traditional Montessori curriculum in our efforts to provide quality academic education while nurturing the social and emotional development of the whole child. Our campus is located on 12 magical acres in South Austin where we can truly explore the natural world with the children, and music is at the heart of our school culture. We are a loving, inclusive family in which children and adults are treated with care, respect, and kindness – simple gifts that have profound, lasting effects.

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our administration team as Director of Education and ensure daily delivery of Parkside’s unique “Montessori from the heart” approach in our programs and our engagement with current and prospective families. The Director of Education reports to, and works in close partnership with, the Head of School in leading our community. We are a small school with a small administration team, so we wear many hats and flexibility and teamwork are key.

Our ideal candidate would have these qualifications:

Professional Attributes:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher, preferably with a concentration in Education
MACTE-accredited Montessori certification required, preferably AMI, AMS, or IMC (certification is required for this position)
5+ years of experience in a Montessori classroom or in administration at a Montessori school
Passion for working in Montessori education
Deep understanding of the Montessori curriculum (Primary and Elementary)
Commitment to exceeding annual professional development requirements and staying abreast of current research and practices in Montessori education and complementary fields
Ability to assess children both in academic curriculum and social development
Exhibits mature oral and written communication skills and practices respectful conflict resolution with both children and adults
Recognizes the importance of and cultivates healthy working relationships with parents
Values engagement and creative collaboration with colleagues
Tech savvy with experience using Google Education Suite and Transparent Classroom as well as providing tech training and support for our staff
Models punctuality, organization, and healthy emotional regulation

Essential Tasks:

Serves as enthusiastic front-line ambassador for the school in interactions with the staff, the children, and current and prospective families
Acts as key player in the annual and long-term goal-setting and planning for the school
Assists the Head of School in the hiring, development, and retention of all staff members
Coaches and supports all guides in embracing the Montessori method and pedagogy in each aspect of their work, including preparation of the environment, lesson planning, classroom management, and parent meetings
Mentors and nurtures new guides in their growth as Montessori educators
Assists and supports lead guides in the training of assistant guides and the development of strong working partnerships
Manages special classroom programs (Music, PE, etc.)
Coordinates support interventions required during the school day (tutors, specialists, etc.)
Frequently observes in each environment and offers timely and constructive feedback and evaluation
Plans and/or facilitates weekly all-staff or program team meetings
Plans and/or facilitates regular professional development opportunities based on current research and practices in Montessori education and complementary fields
Plans and/or facilitates regular parent education opportunities regarding Montessori education, parenting support, or other areas of community interest
Manages staff requests for time off and substitute on-boarding and assignments
Manages mission-appropriate admissions and enrollment processes, including weekly information sessions, frequent communication with prospective families, and placement of children to ensure balance in each environment
Attends all community events

This is a full-time, year-round position, with some evening and weekend responsibilities, and salary is based on education and experience. All applicants are subject to a background check prior to being hired, and all employment relationships are at-will. The new Director of Education will ideally begin work by June 1st, but no later than July 1st.
